How to Measure a Dog for a Harness

How to Measure a Dog for a Harness

Are you wondering how tight a harness should be? Too loose or too tight, both can result in a number of complications such as:

- Uncomfortable rubbing
- Increased risk of pulling
- Abrasions and pain

The general rule of thumb is the two-finger rule. You should be able to place two fingers under the secured harness. This allows just enough leisure for comfortable movement.

Measure your dog before you purchase your harness to choose the best size. Not all harnesses require measurements, but it’s good to have these numbers handy for future purposes as well!

1. Measure Neck Girth

Using a measuring tape, measure the area where the collar would usually sit and make sure to apply the two finger rule.

2. Measure Chest Girth
Measure the widest portion of their rib cage.

3. Measure Body Length

Measure from the base of the neck to the base of their tail.

4. Use a Size Chart
Examine the sizing chart and choose the best size for your dog.
