Puppies go through many changes at this early stage of their lives and diarrhea is a common occurrence. Diarrhea in puppies can be a harmless temporary condition, but it is important to keep an eye on them. When it lasts for longer than 2 days, and is accompanied by vomiting or loss of appetite, puppies should be taken to the veterinarian. Severe dehydration is another dangerous thing that can be a side effect of diarrhea.
There are several common causes of diarrhea:
1. Parasites or Bacterial/Viral Infections
Unvaccinated dogs can be easily infected with canine parvovirus or another form of parasitic infection. Maintaining clean hygiene and keeping up with vaccinations is a way to prevent this.
2. Changes in Diet
An abrupt change in diet can cause diarrhea while the dog's intestinal tract gets used to the new food. Slowly incorporating pieces of the new diet can mitigate this from happening every time you change your dog's diet.
3. Foreign Bodies
Dogs are too curious for their own good. They gobble up some of the craziest things like rocks, socks, and toys which may cause intestinal blockages. More often, vomiting will clear the obstruction. Any severe vomiting, loss of appetite, or diarrhea persisting more than 24 to 48 hours should result in a visit to your vet.
4. Stress & Separation Anxiety
Distressed puppies can have stress-related diarrhea. Any changes in routine can cause anxiety and increased levels of stress for puppies. Acclimate your puppy gradually to new schedules, places, and people.
